Terms of Service

Effective 2026-10-04. Written to be read.

These terms are the agreement between you and ScanMePlz, operated by Municipal Web Works, Irvine, California ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the service you agree to them.

1. The Permanence Promise (binding)

This section is a commitment, not a description of current practice, and we may not narrow it for existing customers without the notice described in section 2.

  1. Dynamic codes keep resolving. If your subscription lapses, is cancelled, is downgraded, or a payment fails, dynamic QR codes you have created will continue to redirect to their destination. We will not disable, expire, suspend or redirect them to any page of our own, including any page promoting payment or upgrade.
  2. Over-limit codes are frozen, not disabled. Where you hold more dynamic codes than your plan allows, the excess are marked frozen. A frozen code continues to redirect and continues to record scans. The only restriction is that its destination cannot be edited until you reduce your code count or move to a plan with capacity.
  3. Scans are not metered. We do not limit the number of times your codes may be scanned, or stop recording scans at a threshold, on any plan including the free plan.
  4. Export is always available. The Permanence Kit — static fallback QR codes, a full code list and your scan history — is available on every plan, including the free plan, and including after cancellation while your account exists.
  5. Exceptions. This promise does not apply to codes you delete yourself; to codes we are required to disable by law or valid legal process; or to codes used for the prohibited purposes in section 5, which we may disable after notifying you at your registered email address where lawful to do so.

2. If the service shuts down

If we decide to discontinue ScanMePlz, we commit to:

  • giving at least 12 months' notice by email to every account holder and publicly on this website;
  • publishing the complete mapping of every code address to its destination, in a machine-readable form, so that it can be reconstructed or re-hosted;
  • keeping redirects resolving for the whole of that notice period.

The same commitment applies if the service is sold or transferred.

3. Your account

You are responsible for keeping your password secure and for activity under your account. You must be at least 16, or the age of digital consent where you live, whichever is higher. Tell us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed by someone else.

4. Plans, billing and refunds

  • Paid plans are billed monthly or annually in advance, in US dollars, through Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
  • Prices are as published on our pricing page. If we raise the price of a plan you are on, we will give 30 days' notice by email and you may cancel before it takes effect.
  • Upgrades take effect immediately and are prorated. Downgrades take effect at the end of the current billing period.
  • You may cancel at any time from your billing settings, without contacting us.
  • Refunds: within 30 days of any charge, for any reason, on request. See the refund policy.

5. Acceptable use

You may not use ScanMePlz to point codes at, or distribute:

  • malware, phishing pages, or anything designed to deceive someone into giving up credentials or payment details;
  • content that is illegal where it is accessed, including child sexual abuse material, which we report to the relevant authorities;
  • content that infringes someone else's intellectual property;
  • material that harasses or threatens a specific person.

We also prohibit using codes to misrepresent affiliation with another organisation — putting a code on a parking meter or a restaurant table that impersonates that business is the dominant real-world QR abuse pattern, and we will act on reports of it.

6. Your content

Your codes, destinations and uploaded files are yours. You grant us only the licence needed to operate the service: to store that content, render QR codes from it, and serve redirects and files to people who scan your codes.

7. Availability

We work hard to keep redirects resolving and publish live health at /status, but we do not offer a contractual uptime guarantee on any plan, and the free plan is provided as-is. Planned maintenance that could affect redirects will be announced in advance on the status page.

8. Suspension and termination

We may suspend an account for breach of section 5. Except where the law or an urgent safety issue requires otherwise, we will email you first and give you a chance to respond. Suspending an account for abuse may include disabling the specific offending codes — this is the exception in section 1(e), and we will say which codes and why.

You may close your account at any time. Closing it retires your dynamic code addresses permanently; anything still in circulation will stop resolving, so export your Permanence Kit first.

9. Liability

To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $100. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, including the cost of reprinting materials. Nothing here limits liability for fraud, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or anything else that cannot be limited by law.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. For any change that materially reduces your rights — including any change to section 1 or 2 — we will give at least 30 days' notice by email, and the previous version continues to apply to you during that period. We keep a public record of changes with dates.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, and the courts of Orange County, California have exclusive jurisdiction, except where your local consumer law gives you the right to bring proceedings where you live.
